What stories matter to you?

I grew up in an immigrant household where the only stories I was told were that of a cautionary nature. When I looked at the media, all I saw was a negative depiction of people like me, people who shared the same background as me—Muslim. I write stories for people who I feel are neglected or misrepresented, if represented at all, in the mainstream media. While I started off focusing on matters which personally I could relate to, specifically regarding Islamophobia, I have learned that the best way to learn more about people is to step outside your comfort zone, which is how I ended up interviewing Chelsea Poe on her experience as a trans queer porn performer. It's important to me that people see me as a reliable and credible journalist but also as someone who has a soul and is truly seeking to share their story and not exploit it.
